You now have the opportunity to join Dr. Prather-Smith for a unique year-long exploration into authentic engagement practices for migrant and immigrant families using Dr. Constantino’s Five Simple Principles ™ model and curriculum.

This cohort will start in August of 2022 and meet monthly through April of 2023.

Meet your instructor

Dr. Prather-Smith has over two decades of work in public education. Her path into education started with her desire to work with, and learn from, historically underserved communities. Through this work, Dr. Prather-Smith has had the opportunity to work closely with diverse families, schools, and communities to create school and community engagement opportunities that have changed the way schools define engagement, and that build meaningful two-way connection between families and schools. Dr. Prather-Smith has spent the past 20+ years working within California’s Migrant Education Program. Her experience at all levels within the Migrant Education Program has provided her with the knowledge and skills to not only engage migrant families, but also to support migrant education staff, general education teachers, and school/district administrators in meeting the diverse educational and social/emotional needs of migrant students and families.

The Experience

Educational teams and Individuals will engage in a series of intentional learning activities designed to:

Opening Session Kick-Off

Dr. Prather-Smith will meet with the cohort as part of a virtual kick-off event to launch the program, set an agenda and learning goals and share the Five Simple Principles ™ model and curriculum.

Structured Monthly Conversations

Invite up to 5 members of your team to a series structured monthly conversations where teams will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with Dr. Prather-Smith to review key strategies for family engagement and develop needs specific family engagement plans. Through individualized activities participants will apply their learnings, bring forward challenges, and brainstorming solutions using data collected between sessions.

Closing Session

At the conclusion of the structured conversations, Dr. Prather-Smith will meet virtually with the cohort to review Family Engagement Plans and discuss next steps for assuring EVERY family is and continues to be engaged in their child’s learning.

Join Dr. Summer Prather-Smit for a unique year-long exploration into authentic family engagement practices for migrant/immigrant families using nationally renowned family engagement expert Dr. Steven Constantino’s Five Simple Principles ™ model and curriculum. Dr. Constantino and Dr. Prather-Smith have designed this cohort experience as a way to bring together teams, and individuals, who are interested in strategically developing, implementing and measuring successful family engagement specifically for migrant and immigrant families. Each cohort will begin with a 4-hour kick-off session in which participants will be introduced to the 5 Simple Principles Model of Family Engagement and a review of strategic objectives for ongoing bi-monthly coaching sessions.

Why do this as part of a cohort?

The cohort model is designed to give Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Project/Program Directors, Migrant/Immigrant Supplemental Program Directors, Family Support Specialists, Site Administrators, District and County Office Administrators, Site Parent Engagement teams an affordable and convenient way to facilitate strategic conversations around authentic family engagement. During monthly 90 min. coaching sessions, teams will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with Dr. Prather-Smith to review key strategies for migrant family engagement and use the Measurable Program Objectives within the State Service Delivery Plan to develop needs specific family engagement plans. Through individualized activities participants will apply their learnings, bring forward challenges, and brainstorming solutions using data collected between sessions. Each group can register up to (5) members of their leadership teams or individuals may register on their own.

What’s included in this program?

Delivered over the course of the school year, the institute includes a 4-hour kick-off conversation,(5) scheduled strategic 90-minute coaching sessions, and a closing implementation review. Additionally, participating schools/districts/programs can choose to invest in 1:1 executive coaching, additional presentations, or on-site implementation support. In addition, all participants will receive a copy of Dr. Constantino’s bestselling book Engage Every Family: Five Simple Principles (2nd Ed.)

The cohort experience provides a unique opportunity for teams to move away from one-time learning experiences and towards implementing Dr. Constantino’s Five Simple Principles ™ with the ongoing guidance and support throughout the year. In each session, individuals, and teams will have designated time to collaborate and connect with Dr. Prather-Smith, as well as others who also have a passion for serving migrant/immigrant families. Through participating in a cohort model, participants will use an iterative thinking model to formalize systemic changes that will guarantee authentic engagement for ALL migrant/immigrant families.
